Israel’s military chief of staff has warned that Hezbollah has spent decades building an extensive underground tunnel network in the Golan Heights’ Golan Buffer Zone, which is now under Israeli military control. Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir made the comments during a visit to the Golan Ridge on Sunday, describing the area as a territory saturated with terrorist infrastructure.
Zamir stated that the militant group, operating with Iranian funding and direction, constructed the sophisticated underground passages with the stated aim of threatening Israeli civilian settlements in the country’s north. However, he emphasised that Israeli forces now maintain control of key positions both above and below ground in the strategically important region.
The military chief pledged an immediate response to any threats directed at Israeli forces or northern communities, saying: “Any threat directed against our forces or the settlements will be immediately attacked and eliminated.” His comments underscore ongoing Israeli military operations and surveillance in the buffer zone, a demilitarised area that has been the scene of frequent tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in recent years.
