Israeli military confirms death of senior Hamas commander in Gaza airstrike

The Israeli Defence Force has confirmed that a senior Hamas military commander was killed in an airstrike last month in Gaza. Mohammad Mostaha, who held the rank of platoon commander in the Shati Battalion of Hamas’s military wing, was seriously wounded in the airstrike at the end of last month and died from his injuries days later.

According to Israeli military statements, Mostaha was involved in the 7 October attack on Israel that triggered the current conflict. The military also alleged that he held multiple hostages captive in various locations across the Gaza Strip during the ensuing war.

The confirmation comes as part of the Israeli military’s ongoing campaign against Hamas leadership and infrastructure in Gaza. The operation has been a central component of Israel’s response to the 7 October attacks, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the taking of over 240 hostages by Hamas and other militant groups.

Mostaha’s death represents another significant loss for Hamas’s military command structure, though the militant group continues to maintain a substantial presence in Gaza despite the intensive military campaign against it.
