A potential Democratic presidential candidate has claimed that opposition to Israel is not a partisan issue in the United States, warning that the country faces a serious credibility crisis among younger Americans. In an interview with Israeli media, the politician argued that Israel’s support in America has become a cross-party problem, with particularly alarming numbers among voters under 30, where he suggested the country enjoys virtually no goodwill.
The candidate directly criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of overrelying on military solutions to complex political problems. He described a disconnect between himself and Netanyahu, suggesting fundamental disagreements on strategy and approach. The comments reflect growing tensions between some senior figures in the Democratic Party and the current Israeli government over its conduct of the conflict in Gaza.
During his visit to Israel, the politician deliberately avoided meeting with other political figures, a decision he explained was made to prevent being used as a political tool. “I didn’t want to become a pawn in his hands,” he stated, suggesting he was unwilling to be manipulated for domestic political purposes. The full interview is set to be published in the Saturday supplement of Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel’s largest newspaper.
