Japan’s deadly heatwave claims three lionesses at Tokyo zoo

Three lionesses have died at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo during Japan’s intense heatwave, succumbing to dehydration and organ failure brought on by extreme heat and humidity. The three animals—Mugi, Ichigo and Luana—were unable to regulate their body temperatures as soaring temperatures and moisture levels overwhelmed the zoo’s cooling systems. Large cats are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat, as they lack efficient mechanisms for cooling themselves in such conditions and rely heavily on environmental controls in captivity. The deaths underscore the severe impact of Japan’s record-breaking temperatures on wildlife facilities across the country.

The incident has raised concerns about animal welfare at the facility. Of the zoo’s 16 lions in total, 10 have displayed unusual symptoms during the heatwave, suggesting widespread stress among the big cat population. Ueno Zoo, one of Japan’s most famous wildlife facilities, has faced criticism over whether its infrastructure was adequately equipped to protect animals during extreme weather events. Zoo officials have indicated they are reviewing their emergency protocols and cooling systems to prevent similar tragedies.

Japan has been experiencing unprecedented heat this summer, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C in major cities. The extreme conditions have not only affected zoos but have also posed serious health risks to the general population, with hospitals reporting increased numbers of heat-related illnesses and deaths across the nation.
