Major earthquake strikes Indonesian island of Flores

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 has struck the island of Flores in Indonesia, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, the organisation reported on Saturday evening. Flores is part of Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands chain, a region that sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent seismic activity. The depth of the quake may have limited potential damage, though authorities will be assessing the situation in the coming hours.
