Netanyahu criticises detention of 50 Chabad draft dodgers at Ben Gurion Airport

Breaking

Approximately 50 young Chabad followers returning from a year of study in New York were detained at Ben Gurion Airport after being identified as draft evaders. The IDF had prepared for their arrival in advance, with some transferred for further military processing whilst dozens were released.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised the detentions, claiming they represented ‘a deliberate attempt to damage the recruitment process.’ This incident highlights ongoing tensions between the military and certain religious communities regarding mandatory military service obligations.

The detainees were identified as draft dodgers upon arrival, triggering standard military protocol responses. The incident underscores recurring disputes over enforcement of conscription laws amongst religious populations in Israel.
