Netanyahu denies ‘compelling evidence’ of settler attack on European diplomats amid international outcry

Breaking

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed there is no ‘compelling evidence’ that settlers attacked European diplomats, despite images from the scene and condemnation from the IDF and other Israeli officials. The statement comes as Belgium has announced it will push for EU sanctions against those involved in the incident.

According to reports, diplomats from Catholic countries were attacked by masked settlers near Ofra in the West Bank. The IDF, President, Foreign Minister and police have all condemned the attack. However, Netanyahu’s office has suggested the incident could be part of a ‘coordinated smear campaign’ against Israel.

One diplomat described the attack: settlers descended from hills with sticks, surrounded vehicles, and kicked the head of the convoy while shouting slogans. The conflicting official Israeli responses—with condemnation from security and diplomatic officials contrasted against the PM’s dismissal—highlight internal tensions over the incident’s characterisation and response.

The European Union’s response signals potential diplomatic consequences, with sanctions discussions underway following the assault on diplomats from multiple EU member states.
