France experienced unprecedented waves of violence across multiple cities, with 1,200 arrests made as rioters targeted government buildings and infrastructure. In Limoges, a historic 143-year-old municipal building was set ablaze, while Marseille witnessed intense street battles and numerous incidents of looting and arson.
The unrest saw 150 police officers injured during the clashes. In Saint-Étienne, a 17-year-old was wounded by a grenade, and Bordeaux saw multiple government buildings destroyed. Violence was reported near the Élysée Palace in Paris, with activists reportedly calling for the protest to be transformed into a “war zone.” An influencer who called for escalation was arrested.
President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence as “sowing chaos,” as authorities continue to assess the scale of damage and coordinate response efforts across the country.
