The Ministry of Immigration and Absorption today marked the ninth of May, the day of the Allies' victory over Nazi Germany, in a ceremony held in the Knesset. The ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Immigration and Absorption, Ofir Sofer , the CEO of his office, the Chairman of the World Zionist Organization Yaakov Haguel , the Chairman of the World Mizrahi Rabbi Doron Peretz , war heroes, members of the Knesset and youth organizations. The course of the ceremony was accompanied by the police band and the "Hiyo Yamiim Hevar" choir.
"How symbolic were the dates of the 9th of May and the 3rd of Omar, the Bar Kochba revolt and its historical consequences and perhaps as a correction, the victory over Nazi Germany and the historical consequences that led to the establishment of the State of Israel," said Minister Sofer at the ceremony. "Over a million Jews fought in the allied armies, in the brigade, partisans and underground fighters. Over half a million fought in the Red Army, about 200 thousand of them fell in the battle systems."
The minister also said: "The numbers are unfathomable and can only partially testify to the intensity of the battle and the heroism that was required at that time. We fought under a foreign flag and on foreign soil. On behalf of the Israeli government, I want to thank you for this important victory over heroism, I want to thank you for passing on the chain of heroism and the spirit of victory."
The chairman of the state camp faction, MK Ze'ev Elkin, said: "We won the Second World War, we won the War of Independence and we will win today as well. Anyone who raises a hand against us – blood on his head.'
