Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held indirect talks with senior Islamic Jihad officials regarding negotiations on a hostage deal and a cease-fire in Gaza – this was reported this morning (Tuesday) in "Al-Akhbar". According to the report, Netanyahu held meetings attended by Israeli security officials and a UN official, to discuss the Palestinian front.
A diplomatic source said that he said that Netanyahu summoned the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Vansland, to his office, and met with him in the presence of members of the Israeli negotiating team, and asked him to deliver an urgent message to the leadership of the Islamic Jihad movement in Beirut, in a proposal To open a direct and specific negotiation channel, regardless of what is happening with Hamas.
The source added that Winsland sent his aide, Miroslav Zafirov, along with another aide responsible for West Bank affairs, to Beirut last Saturday to convey the proposal, adding that the two members of the delegation met with a representative of the Jihad leadership, who informed them that "the response will come to them on Monday." Yesterday evening, the leadership of the movement informed the Office of the Special Coordinator of the United Nations for the Middle East Peace Process of its "absolute rejection of the proposal".
