Paraguay’s Senate has voted unanimously to remove President Santiago Peña from office following a major banking crisis that devastated the nation’s economy. Peña, who had relocated his country’s embassy to Jerusalem and delivered a speech in the Israeli Knesset, was arrested on suspicion of breach of trust and abuse of power.
The removal comes after approximately 60% of Paraguay’s population lost their savings in a banking collapse. Large crowds gathered outside Congress chanting “Dictatorship – never again!” as the vote proceeded.
The arrest marks a significant political upheaval in the South American nation and represents a dramatic reversal for one of Israel’s few Latin American allies who had taken the symbolic step of moving the embassy to Jerusalem.
