Israel’s police watchdog is investigating an alleged unlawful shooting during a police operation in the Bedouin village of Sgev Shalom in the south. According to the teenager’s family, a police volunteer fired at the 17-year-old boy, who sustained moderate injuries to his leg, while he was riding a motorcycle and filming the officers present at the scene.
The incident raises questions about the rules of engagement and oversight of volunteer officers working alongside regular police personnel. The volunteer has been released under restrictive conditions, including a prohibition on contacting anyone involved in the case.
The investigation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of police conduct during operations in Bedouin communities in southern Israel. The case is being handled by the Israel Police’s Internal Investigations Department (Mahash), which examines allegations of misconduct and potential criminal violations by police officers.
