Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced he will task a prime ministerial candidate on Sunday following recommendations from Knesset members. Maj. Gen. (ret.) Gadi Eisenkot received the backing of 67 out of 120 MKs, making him the leading candidate to form a new government.
The development comes as the political landscape shifts, with Avigdor Liberman reversing his previous boycott of Haredi parties and signalling openness to coalition talks with United Torah Judaism (UTJ). UTJ has stated it will refrain from recommending incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The opposition bloc, led by Yashar, has ruled out any coalition arrangement with Netanyahu. Meanwhile, the Likud party has called for national unity while characterising rival blocs as ‘the disaster bloc’.
This represents a significant political realignment in Israeli coalition negotiations, with multiple parties reconsidering their positions on potential government formation.
