Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador following an attack on a Qatari-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident marks an escalation in tensions in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which roughly a third of global seaborne trade passes.
In a formal diplomatic rebuke, Qatar called on Iran to “immediately cease all practices that threaten regional security and stop endangering global shipping security and energy supply.” The statement underscores growing international concern about the safety of commercial vessels transiting the strategically vital waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
The attack on the Qatari vessel represents the latest in a series of incidents affecting shipping in the region, raising alarm bells among world powers and maritime authorities. The Strait of Hormuz remains essential to global energy security, with major oil and liquefied natural gas exports passing through its narrow waters.
Qatar’s formal complaint signals a hardening diplomatic stance against Iranian actions that could destabilise the region and disrupt international commerce. The incident comes amid broader tensions in the Gulf, where freedom of navigation has become an increasingly contentious issue.
