Costa Rican candidate Rebecca Greenspan, a Jewish woman and daughter of Holocaust survivors, has strengthened her position in the race for UN Secretary-General by securing backing from 11 of 15 Security Council members in the seventh straw poll, according to multiple Israeli sources including Ynet and Israel Hayom.
Greenspan has widened her lead over Lana Nusseibeh of the United Arab Emirates, though four Security Council members have opposed her candidacy. Notably, a permanent member with veto power may be among those opposing her, which could block her appointment.
Turkey has entered a rival candidate into the competition: former Foreign Minister Sinirlioglu, who previously served as ambassador to Israel. Turkey’s move appears designed to break the deadlock and challenge Greenspan’s momentum, raising questions about which permanent Security Council members might ultimately veto her nomination.
