Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported Thursday that Russia attacked the capital Kyiv overnight with three ballistic missiles carrying cluster munitions. According to Zelensky, the missiles were designed to detonate in mid-air and disperse ordnance across an area approximately 400 metres in diameter.
One of the missiles struck the historic centre of Kyiv, landing near the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. The use of cluster munitions in populated civilian areas constitutes a potential war crime under international humanitarian law, as these weapons are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions.
The attack represents a continuation of Russia’s ongoing campaign to strike Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and historic sites, particularly targeting the capital city.
