A 14-year-old student from ORT Ma’alot Yeshiva High School was killed and 23 others injured, including three in serious condition, when an explosive device detonated during a school trip in northern Israel. Israeli media reports indicate the students had found ordnance at the location and were handling it when the explosion occurred.
According to eyewitness accounts from parents and the police commissioner at the scene, the teenagers appear to have been playing with the explosive before one of their backpacks was positioned nearby when detonation occurred. Prime Minister Netanyahu visited injured children in hospital following the incident.
Police indicated they may impose restrictions on similar outdoor activities in the near future. The incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols during school excursions in areas with potential unexploded ordnance.
