The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court in response to the court’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to reports from Israel Hayom and Ynet, the sanctions have been characterised by ICC officials as “an attack on the rule of law.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened to “put an end” to the ICC but expressed hope for a “diplomatic solution.” The move represents a significant escalation in US-ICC relations and reflects the Trump administration’s strong support for Israel.
European powers have expressed concern about the sanctions and their impact on ICC staff. The European Union has committed to ensuring the ICC “continues to operate,” while Belgium called for activation of special blocking provisions. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the sanctions as a “serious damage to justice.”
This action comes as part of broader Trump administration policies regarding international institutions and demonstrates strong diplomatic backing for Netanyahu amid the ICC proceedings.
