UN selects new International Court of Justice judges with controversial Israel-related backgrounds

Breaking

The UN General Assembly and Security Council have selected five judges for eight-year terms at the International Court of Justice, including appointments that have drawn sharp criticism from Israel. Among the new judges is a Jordanian jurist who accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and “war crimes” on 30 October 2023, and a female judge who previously advised Namibia in proceedings against another country.

Israeli Ambassador Danon condemned the selections as “yet another example of the UN’s inherent bias against Israel”, highlighting concerns about the composition of the court as it faces multiple cases related to Israeli military operations and settlements.

The appointments come amid heightened international scrutiny of Israel’s conduct in the Middle East and represent a significant development in the legal landscape surrounding potential international accountability measures.
