The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has confirmed it will begin withdrawing from south Lebanon when its mandate expires on 31 December, according to Times of Israel reporting.
Lebanese officials have warned that the peacekeepers’ withdrawal could leave a significant security vacuum in the region. Israel has separately accused the security force of failing to prevent Hezbollah from proliferating its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon during UNIFIL’s deployment.
The impending withdrawal raises serious concerns about security stability along the Lebanese-Israeli border and the potential for increased tensions in the region following the departure of international peacekeeping forces.
