The US Treasury Department announced sanctions against 16 individuals and ten entities, including banks in Iraq, Iran and Hong Kong, targeting Iranian financial networks. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network identified the Iranian regime’s use of religious charity networks and ‘khums’ payments to enrich senior officials and finance terrorist activities.
The action represents a coordinated effort to disrupt Iran’s ability to move funds through international banking systems and charitable organisations that serve as fronts for terror financing. The sanctions target both direct financial institutions and intermediaries used to obscure the flow of resources to designated terrorist organisations.
This move aligns with broader US policy of restricting Iran’s access to global financial systems and targeting the regime’s support networks for designated terrorist groups operating across the Middle East region.
