US tightens Iran embargo as 62 ships forced to change course

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced that 62 commercial vessels have altered their routes as part of America’s enforcement of sanctions against Iran. The announcement highlights Washington’s intensified efforts to prevent trade reaching the Iranian regime through maritime channels. Three ships were detained during enforcement operations, whilst two additional vessels underwent inspections to ensure compliance with sanctions regulations.

The blockade enforcement comes as the United States prepares to rotate its aircraft carrier presence in the region, maintaining naval superiority in the strategic waters of the Middle East. The sanctions regime against Iran has been a cornerstone of US foreign policy, particularly following America’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal in 2018.

The latest figures underscore the effectiveness of American pressure on international shipping companies to avoid Iranian ports and entities. Commercial operators face significant financial penalties and legal consequences for violating sanctions, leading most shipping lines to voluntarily reroute vessels away from Iranian waters and facilities.

The enforcement actions reflect broader US strategy to contain Iranian regional influence and prevent the regime from accessing international markets. Washington maintains that the pressure campaign aims to compel Tehran to modify its nuclear programme and curtail support for proxy forces across the Middle East.
