The United States will carry out its first execution by firing squad in the military since 1961, with the execution to be livestreamed to the public. Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at Fort Hood military base 17 years ago, is scheduled to be executed on 3 December.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that members of the public will be able to watch the execution, calling the decision a “no brainer” while speaking aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The execution marks a historic moment in US military justice and will be the first public military execution in modern times.
Hasan was convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, one of the worst mass shootings at a US military installation. The decision to livestream the execution has drawn attention from multiple international news sources covering the unprecedented move.
