A significant earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale has struck Sichuan province in southwestern China, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The quake struck on Wednesday, with its epicentre located at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface.
Sichuan province, home to over 83 million people, has a long history of seismic activity. The region sits in one of China’s most earthquake-prone areas, positioned along major fault lines that frequently experience tectonic shifts.
While the German geological institute confirmed the magnitude 5.0 reading, authorities have not yet released reports of significant casualties or structural damage. The depth of the quake at 10 kilometres may have helped mitigate the impact at ground level, though further assessments are ongoing.
