Somia Bashir, a leading candidate for a realistic position on Yair Golan’s Labour party slate, is facing serious allegations of campaign finance irregularities and accusations of distancing herself from LGBTQ+ activists. According to reports, hundreds of registration forms submitted on her behalf during the 2022 Labour primary elections were rejected after being processed through the same credit card, raising questions about campaign financing practices.
LGBTQ+ activists have voiced concerns about Bashir’s commitment to their community, pointing to controversial social media posts in which she drew comparisons between Gaza and the Warsaw Ghetto. The posts have sparked significant criticism within progressive circles ahead of the upcoming primary elections.
Bashir has responded to the allegations by claiming her reputation is being deliberately damaged. “They are blackening my name,” she stated, pushing back against what she characterises as a coordinated campaign against her candidacy. The controversy threatens to complicate her path to securing a viable position on the party’s electoral list.
The allegations come at a sensitive time for Israel’s Labour party as it seeks to rebuild its electoral standing and mobilise its base ahead of forthcoming elections. The party has historically relied on strong support from LGBTQ+ voters and progressive constituencies.
