A former Israeli bodyguard has developed an innovative identification hat designed to reduce the risk of armed civilians being shot by mistake during terror attacks. Ron Markowitz has created a rapid-deployment cap that pops open with one hand, intended for licensed gun-carrying citizens across Israel. The device aims to quickly identify armed civilians to security forces and other armed persons at the scene of an attack, preventing tragic cases of mistaken identity in chaotic situations.

The inspiration for the invention came from the death of Yuval Castelman, who was fatally shot in an apparent friendly fire incident near Jerusalem after neutralising a terrorist. Castelman had successfully stopped an attacker but was then shot by security personnel who mistook him for a threat, highlighting the critical need for rapid identification systems during active security incidents.

Markowitz describes his creation as “an insurance policy for the armed citizen” in Israel. The hat’s simple one-handed deployment mechanism is designed to work quickly in high-stress situations where every second counts. The Israeli government has made it relatively easy for citizens to obtain firearms licences for self-defence purposes, making such identification tools potentially valuable for public safety.

The invention reflects ongoing challenges Israeli security forces face when responding to terror attacks in populated areas, where distinguishing between attackers and armed civilians can be extremely difficult in the immediate aftermath of an incident. The hat represents a practical solution to a problem that has caused tragic loss of life among Israelis who intervened to stop attackers.
