The UK, Canada, France, Ireland and 10 other countries have announced coordinated national restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements in a significant diplomatic move. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband declared the West Bank occupation illegal and announced sanctions including trade limitations and business activity restrictions.

The coordinated action represents an unprecedented multilateral stance against Israeli settlement policy. Additionally, 24 nations issued statements criticising the E1 settlement project, with some nations already supporting sanctions while others indicated support pending EU coordination.

In response, Israel’s Defence Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem and barred 11 British MPs from entering Israel. Palestinian Authority Ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot praised the sanctions as a “turning point” and called for further measures including an arms embargo.

Israeli exporters from settlements expressed concern about the impact. Winery owners in Samaria warned of significant damage to exports, with one noting that nearly 50% of their export markets were affected by the restrictions.
