Hundreds of Haredi protesters surrounded a police building in Jerusalem and detained soldiers who arrived to arrest a young man who failed to appear in court. The escalating situation saw a police officer attacked during the confrontation.
Following negotiations with police after the assault on the officer, authorities decided to release the detainee in exchange for dispersing the crowd. Activists used a Red Cross megaphone to help clear the assembled protesters from the area.
The incident represents an unusual capitulation by police to crowd pressure during what was intended as a law enforcement action. The chair of the ‘Haredi Public’ party stated: ‘These lawless people belong behind bars’ in response to the standoff.
The event reflects ongoing tensions between law enforcement and sections of the Haredi community over military conscription and compliance with court orders, with the forced release of the detainee setting a significant precedent.
