A significant crisis has erupted between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi during a security briefing at Palmachim, with deep disagreements over a planned operation related to Iran and the continuation of military operations in Hebron.
According to Ynet reporting, Halevi expressed concerns that conducting an operation before elections could provoke an Iranian retaliatory strike. Netanyahu’s office has responded by stating that the Chief of Staff is overstepping his authority, whilst the security establishment has countered that Halevi is serving as “the last line of defense.” Both Netanyahu and National Security Minister Ben Gvir have denied any intention to dismiss Halevi.
This represents one of the most serious confrontations between political and military leadership in Israel in recent years, with fundamental disagreements over both Iran strategy and ongoing military campaigns. The timing, just before elections, has heightened tensions between the civilian government and the military establishment over decision-making authority.
