A Reuters investigation has uncovered an unusual intersection between the cryptocurrency networks used by Donald Trump’s family-backed digital assets project and those utilised by Iran’s largest crypto exchange. The Iranian platform Nobitex has transferred at least $2.3 billion (approximately £1.8 billion) through the Tron and BNB Chain networks, both of which were founded by supporters of Trump’s cryptocurrency initiative. The discovery highlights the complex and sometimes contradictory landscape of cryptocurrency adoption across geopolitical divides, where decentralised blockchain networks operate independently of traditional sanctions and regulatory frameworks. The finding raises questions about the intermingling of cryptocurrency infrastructure used by figures on opposite sides of significant international tensions, with both entities relying on the same underlying blockchain platforms for their transactions. The use of these networks by the Iranian exchange underscores how cryptocurrency’s borderless nature can create unexpected connections between parties who would otherwise operate in entirely separate spheres of influence and commerce.
