A British scientist warns: "Artificial intelligence will wreak havoc on humanity" – and this is why

British scientist Stuart Russell warns that the existence of artificial intelligence (AI), capable of solving any intellectual problem – threatens humanity and will bring disaster.

Russell said in an interview with the "Times" newspaper that uncontrolled research in the field of artificial intelligence led to the fact that "we have achieved progress that we ourselves did not expect", and added that it is possible that the ultra-intelligent machines will resist attempts to control them in the future.

He said: "How can you maintain your power in the face of beings stronger than you? If you don't have an answer, stop looking. Everything is very simple. The stake could not be greater: if we do not control our civilization, we will lose the right to decide the fate of our existence in the future." .

Russell noted that the emergence of comprehensive artificial intelligence, meaning a system that can perform any task a human might perform, may occur within the next ten years.

He expressed his concerns that these systems, while solving problems related to climate, for example, may come to the conclusion that the best solution to this problem is the elimination of humanity.

According to him, "If you teach artificial intelligence to imitate human behavior, you are actually teaching it to define and follow human goals. Human goals include a variety of things… We can only imagine what a disaster the emergence of efficient systems that will pursue goals will lead to."

The American businessman and billionaire, Elon Musk, has previously warned that artificial intelligence will dominate itself because of its ability to destroy humanity.
