Former MK Yair Golan is expected to run for the leadership of the Labor Party in the upcoming primaries at the end of May. In a statement on his behalf, it was stated that "We have two tasks: to dissolve the government as quickly as possible and to unite the camp. Unfortunately, Rabbi Michaeli forces internal primaries at work and opposes the unification of the camp. We will be elected, unite in the process and establish a new political framework that will unite the entire liberal-democratic camp under a new brand ".

The announcement comes after MK and Chairman of the Labor Party Merav Michaeli refused proposals to promote unification in the left-wing parties and holding joint primaries for the leadership of the bloc. However, in December last year, Michaeli announced her retirement from political life , which could pave the way for the unification of the parties on the left side of the map.

Golan was one of the founders of Ehud Barak's party, Democratic Israel, and after his party joined the list of the democratic camp, Golan was placed third on this list ahead of the elections for the twenty-second Knesset and was elected to the Knesset. In December 2020, he announced his appointment to Meretz and the following year, was elected on her behalf to the twenty-fourth Knesset. In July 2021 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry.

On July 6, 2022, he announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Meretz party, but lost to Zahava Galon and was subsequently elected fourth in the list elections and placed fifth. Meretz did not pass the threshold in these elections, and Golan was not elected to the Knesset.
