Eritrean forces have invaded Ethiopia’s Tigray region to a depth of approximately 60 kilometres, according to Ethiopian government accusations. Ethiopia claims its neighbour is providing support to rebels in the Tigray area, where fighting has recently reignited.
Ethiopia has characterised the Eritrean military incursion as a declaration of war and is calling for United Nations Security Council intervention to deter further aggression. Ethiopian officials stated: “We will be forced to defend ourselves.” The invasion follows renewed clashes with Tigray rebel forces that began last month.
Eritrea has denied the allegations of military intervention, despite multiple reports from international sources confirming Eritrean forces have entered Tigray territory. Eritrea has instead appealed to the UN Security Council, urging it to intervene and calling the Ethiopian actions a declaration of war against Eritrea.
