Haredi draft riots and fugitive release trigger major political backlash and security concerns

Breaking

Major riots erupted in Modi’in involving hundreds of Haredi protesters, resulting in a fugitive’s release after negotiations between rioters and police. Reports indicate protesters agreed not to attack soldiers in exchange for the fugitive not being arrested, raising serious concerns about law and order breakdown.

Police and military are now blaming each other for the handling of the situation. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir criticised the response, stating “it’s unbearable that soldiers fled under protection,” drawing comparisons to incidents in Jenin. He described how he utilised the organising time to evacuate hundreds of Haredi individuals from the area.

Political figures across the spectrum have attacked Shas chairman Aryeh Deri over the incident. Naftali Bennett stated “we are one moment away from another disaster,” while Gadi Eisenkot warned “someone who serves cannot be the sucker.” The incident reflects escalating tensions between state security forces and Haredi communities refusing military service, with allegations of anarchism and governance breakdown.
