IDF reservist system under severe strain as operational tempo continues unsustainable

Breaking

Nearly three years after 7 October, Israeli military reservists continue to face unsustainable operational demands, with hundreds serving hundreds of days annually while juggling family, education and employment responsibilities. Colonel Benny Ben-Ari, the IDF’s chief reserves officer, has described the enormous attrition occurring within the reserves system.

Ben-Ari warned that “the envelope surrounding them is already close to the edge,” indicating that current operational commitments cannot continue at present levels without further degradation of reserve force capability. The strain on reservists and supporting personnel shows no signs of abating in the near term, according to IDF assessments.

The continued rotation of reserves through operational cycles represents a critical pressure point for the Israeli military, as the reserves form a substantial portion of combat and support forces. The sustainability crisis within the reserves system reflects broader challenges facing the IDF’s force structure after prolonged conflict operations.
