Israel hit by Trump tariffs as US imposes 12.5% levy on tech and food imports

The Trump administration has imposed a new round of tariffs on more than 80 countries and trading partners, including Israel, in what it officially describes as a crackdown on forced labour practices. Israel faces a 12.5 per cent tariff on technology, food, consumer goods and chemicals imported into the United States, replacing previous duties that had expired.

The tariffs, which range from 10 to 12.5 per cent across affected countries, were introduced as an anti-forced labour measure. However, the timing and scope of the move suggest the new duties are primarily replacements for expired earlier tariffs rather than a genuine enforcement action against labour violations.

While some countries facing forced labour accusations reportedly managed to negotiate exemptions or more favourable terms, Israel received the full 12.5 per cent duty rate. The tariffs are expected to impact significant Israeli export sectors, particularly in high-tech manufacturing, agricultural products and chemical industries, all of which are substantial contributors to Israeli exports to the American market.
