Israel’s election results leave president facing impossible coalition choice between Netanyahu and Eisenkot

Breaking

Israel’s election results have produced a deadlocked parliament with competing blocs claiming victory, forcing President Herzog into a difficult decision over who should receive the mandate to form a government. According to exit polls from Channels 11, 12, and 13, Gadi Eisenkot’s opposition bloc holds a narrow lead of 53-50 or 52-50 seats over Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing religious coalition, though Netanyahu’s Likud party emerged as the single largest party with approximately 27 seats.

Eisenkot has declared victory despite the overall deadlock, capitalising on his bloc’s numerical advantage. However, Netanyahu maintains that he holds the path to a stable 61-seat governing majority, though political sources indicate this requires support from multiple parties including Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, Naftali Bennett, Yair Lapid, and Avigdor Lieberman. Ben Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit party may be excluded from coalition negotiations, whilst negotiations with the haredi parties are expected to prove significantly more complicated than in previous government formations.

Political analysts in Eisenkot’s circle believe he will receive the first opportunity to form a government, though his path appears “nearly impossible” according to Israeli media assessments. A national unity government with rotation arrangements between Eisenkot and Netanyahu has been proposed as a potential resolution, though opposition figures face pressure from Security Minister Israel Katz and others warning against forming a minority government with support from Arab parties, which they characterise as contradicting pre-election commitments.
