"Mafiosi threat": The attorney's office is angry with the Likud, which is expected to postpone the discussion on the dissolution proposal

The government's new proposal to dissolve the bar association and remove it from the committee for selecting judges, promoted by Knesset member Hanoch Milbitsky (Likud), is causing a stir, but in the meantime, as Maariv has learned, it seems that it is not expected to come up on Sunday in the ministerial committee for legislative affairs, as initially planned. Officials privy to the details told Maariv today (Wednesday) that "the intention is clear. Only with proper cooperation of the bureau with the government will it be possible to amend the decree and keep the bureau relevant."

A senior official at the Bar Association told Maariv: "The bill that will make the bar voluntary is a sword hanging over the Bar Association's head. If Amit Bachar is elected to head the bar, this sword will bring about the end of the bar and leave it powerless for the sake of the legal community."

Another senior official in the bar told Maariv: "This shameful bill is a mafiosi threat intended to influence the elections for the head of the Bar Association. The government is sending a message that if their candidate is not elected, they will disband the bar. The bar community will not be afraid, and will elect the head of the bar in three weeks The proper bureau".

Knesset member Efrat Raiten told Ma'ariv about the bill to make the bar voluntary: "The bill proposes to close the Bar Association and establish a council in its place, which means a political takeover of the Bar Association. Just as they are trying to take over the committee for selecting judges, as part of the coup. To the Bar Association "D There are democratic elections, the lawyers elect a council and it elects the representatives to the committee. Unlike the "council" that wants to establish the government, all the appointments in it will be made by politicians.

"The talks at the president's house are stuck, no agreements are reached, the deadline for the elections to the committee for the appointment of judges is approaching and the move to change the composition was not successful, so the government is now coming through the back door and trying to torpedo the appointment of the chairman of the Bar Association to secure its candidate in this place. in a mechanism that may corrupt the committee and the bureau and weaken any factor that can balance or check the power of the government."

The former chairman of the bar, and who is now running for its presidency, Efi Neve , also commented on the promotion of the proposal and said: "The intention to make the bar voluntary is bad news for the lawyer community, which means erasing from the foundation all the bar's achievements for generations and a total cancellation of the umbrella of protection that the bar provides to its members . Unfortunately, this is the price we pay for the decision of the temporary chairman of the bureau to fund political demonstrations with the funds of the bureau and turn it into a body that is politically identified. But there is still hope. When I am elected, I will fight a bitter war to cancel the decree and remove the issue from the agenda."

Similarly, the former Minister of Justice, MK Gideon Sa'ar, attacked: "The promotion of the law to dissolve the Bar Association two weeks before the elections to the bar is scandalous in itself. The fact that a representative of the Likud's negotiating team leads the proposal that also removes the representatives of the bar from the committee for selecting judges indicates an extreme lack of good faith. The Likud must immediately remove the proposal from the agenda of the Committee of Ministers for Legislation."

The struggle for the robes stated in response to the bill that is expected to come up on Sunday in the Ministerial Committee for Legislative Affairs: "The proposal promoted by the members of the Knesset from the coalition, which aims to dissolve the Bar Association, abolish the representatives of the bar in the committee for selecting judges and allow the amendment of the Basic Law through an ordinary law, is the proof that the intention is to destroy Israeli democracy still stands. It seems that from the coalition's point of view, the meetings at the President's House are just idle talks and it is time to stop the talks and go back to the streets. The struggle of the robes will not allow any attempt at malicious legislation to change the face of the State of Israel to disappear from the public eye."

On behalf of the "Leaders of Resistance to the Dictatorship" it was stated: "The proposal that will be put forward to the government on Sunday to dissolve the Bar Association is more severe than most coup laws. It will turn not only the judges into judges but also the lawyers into judges. The very discussion of the proposal is the de facto promotion of the regime coup. The president himself should announce that if the discussion takes place, he stops the negotiations."
