Man arrested over alleged protection racket at Ashdod industrial zone

Police have arrested a resident of Khoura on suspicion of running a protection racket disguised as security services at Ashdod’s industrial zone. The arrest was made on Monday during an operation involving Border Police, undercover officers and South District police as part of an ongoing covert investigation into alleged extortion payments demanded from businesses in the area.

The investigation, which has been conducted by the Southern Protection Investigation Unit (Lahav 433), centres on allegations that the suspect has been collecting payments from companies under the pretence of providing security services. The industrial zone in Ashdod, a major port city in southern Israel, is home to numerous manufacturing and logistics businesses that would typically require legitimate security arrangements.

The operation represents an intensification of efforts by Israeli law enforcement to crack down on organised extortion schemes targeting commercial areas. Such protection rackets, where businesses are coerced into paying for unnecessary services under threat, remain a persistent challenge for authorities across the country.
