Israel’s Police Commissioner Dani Levy has sought to clarify the force’s position on following Supreme Court decisions, stating that police will implement any ruling from the Court without question or hesitation. His comments came during a conference of the movement division held on Wednesday, and appear designed to resolve confusion created when the police spokesman declined to answer questions about which authority police would obey in the event of a clash between the Supreme Court and the government.
The commissioner’s remarks represent an attempt to reaffirm police neutrality in Israel’s ongoing constitutional tensions. ‘We represent the rule of law and obey it,’ Levy said. ‘Every Supreme Court decision, from our perspective, is a decision we will implement without batting an eyelid.’
Levi emphasised that political considerations play no role in the police’s decision-making. ‘It doesn’t matter what someone in politics thinks or what their opinion is. We are an apolitical organisation that keeps our opinions within our own walls,’ he added. The statement underscores the traditional Israeli police position that the force operates independently of political pressures, though recent tensions between the government and judiciary have raised questions about institutional independence across various state bodies.
