Israeli police have launched a new road safety initiative called ‘Road Officers’ aimed at reducing traffic accidents and dangerous driving behaviour. The programme will see dash cameras and a dedicated app installed in approximately 100 police vehicles across the country, allowing officers to document traffic violations and dangerous driving in real time.
The move represents a significant shift in enforcement tactics, as police will now be able to record evidence of traffic offences directly from their vehicles whilst on patrol. This includes dangerous lane changes, tailgating, and other violations that contribute to Israel’s road safety challenges. The recorded footage can be used as evidence in prosecutions and to identify patterns of dangerous driving behaviour.
Police Commissioner Danny Levi expressed his strong support for the initiative, noting that he personally requested a camera be installed in his own vehicle. ‘This is judgment day for people who drive on the hard shoulder and cut across lanes,’ Levi stated, adding that driving standards in Israel sometimes resemble those of a third-world country. The comment underscores police concerns about widespread traffic violations and the need for stronger enforcement measures.
Road safety remains a pressing issue in Israel, with traffic accidents causing hundreds of deaths annually. The new dashboard camera system is expected to improve compliance with traffic laws and encourage safer driving practices across the country.
