Repeated severe sunburns could raise skin cancer risk by nearly 70%, study warns

Repeated severe sunburns throughout life could significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer, according to a comprehensive review of 17 studies involving over 321,000 people. Researchers found that the danger was particularly acute for those who suffered serious burns during childhood, with the risk potentially rising by up to 69 per cent.

The analysis, which brought together data from multiple large-scale studies, highlights the cumulative effects of sun exposure over a lifetime. A single severe sunburn can cause lasting damage to skin cells, but the research suggests that multiple burns compound this harm considerably.

The findings underscore why childhood sun protection is especially important. Those who experienced severe sunburns as children faced the highest elevated risk for skin cancer in later life, suggesting that early damage sets the stage for potential malignancy years or even decades later. Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is particularly associated with intense sun exposure and burning, whilst other types such as basal cell carcinoma are more closely linked to cumulative lifetime UV exposure.

Dermatologists continue to stress the importance of consistent sun protection throughout life, including the use of high-factor sunscreen, protective clothing, and limiting time in intense midday sun. The research adds fresh weight to public health campaigns encouraging families to protect children from sunburn, as prevention during formative years may be the most effective way to reduce skin cancer risk in adulthood.
