Saudi Arabia has vowed to respond with force to any attempt to strike the kingdom, following fresh threats from Yemen’s Houthi movement. The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen issued the warning on Friday, pledging a response characterised by “unprecedented force” against any attacks on Saudi territory or interests. The statement came just hours after the Iran-aligned Houthis threatened to target Saudi airports and vital interests on land and sea if the kingdom continues what they characterise as violations of Yemeni airspace.
The escalating rhetoric marks the latest chapter in the long-running conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels, who have previously launched drone and missile attacks against the kingdom. The Houthis have repeatedly used threats of attacks on Saudi infrastructure as leverage in their dispute with the coalition, which has been conducting military operations in Yemen since 2015.
The standoff underscores the fragile security situation in the region, with the Houthis using aerial threats as a negotiating tactic whilst Saudi Arabia seeks to maintain its defensive and offensive capabilities. Both sides have made similar declarations of resolve in the past, though actual escalations have proven costly for civilians caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict.
