Israel’s security services have issued warnings that major crime infrastructure in the Negev could evolve into organised terror cells, representing a significant security threat to the state. According to Ynet reporting, the distinction between organised crime and terrorism is narrowing, with criminal networks potentially weaponising existing smuggling routes and illicit financial flows.
The Shin Bet’s assessment highlights that unmanned aircraft used for drug and goods smuggling across the Egyptian border could be repurposed for attacks on military bases. Additionally, proceeds from drug trafficking and protection rackets could be diverted towards weapons procurement, creating a pipeline from organised crime to militant activity.
Security officials have expressed concern that the integration of criminal and terror infrastructure poses an escalating risk to national security if left unchecked. The warning reflects broader concerns about lawlessness in Bedouin communities and the need for enhanced security measures in the region.
