A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Vanuatu region in the South Pacific on Saturday morning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake’s epicentre was located in the ocean approximately 200 kilometres west of Sola, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific, lies in a seismically active zone prone to significant tectonic activity. The USGS provides real-time earthquake monitoring and impact assessments for major seismic events globally.
Initial reports from the USGS indicate the earthquake occurred in a marine location, which may reduce immediate impact on populated areas, though authorities typically issue tsunami warnings following earthquakes of this magnitude in the Pacific region.
