US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, declaring that he will soon announce the Strait of Hormuz as American territory. Speaking at a rally in New York on Friday, Trump stated that after defeating Iran — which he claimed is already heavily defeated — he would move to formally claim the strategically vital waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, through which approximately one-third of global maritime oil trade passes. Control of the strait gives significant leverage over international energy markets and global commerce.
Trump’s comments represent an escalation in rhetoric towards Tehran and signal an aggressive approach to US interests in the Middle East. The announcement reflects the administration’s broader confrontational stance on Iranian activities in the region, though such a territorial claim would face significant international legal challenges under established maritime law.
The statement comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional military activities, and American strategic interests in the Gulf region.
