Former Prime Minister and current leader of the opposition Yair Lapid met today with the chairman of the state camp Benny Gantz in light of the division in the opposition regarding the selection of the representative for the committee for the appointment of judges. In their meeting, the two agreed to continue acting together and in coordination on the issue.
Also, Gantz met with Labor Party Chairman Merav Michaeli and the two also agreed to continue working together and in coordination on the issue.
As I recall, despite the joint statement by Lapid and Gantz, according to which "talking at the President's House is the only possibility for finding a common solution" regarding the reform of the judicial system, opposition officials were frustrated by the split between the bloc's parties, and claimed that "instead of presenting a united front, they are dealing with internal matters." According to them, the opposition is divided and fails to win significant votes and weaken the government.
The candidates who are on the agenda for their election as representatives on the coveted committee are Knesset member Karin Elharer, whom Lapid supported and called for her election, and Efrat Raiten, who announced that she will run for a place on the committee. Also, the name of Panina Tamno Sheta came up as a possibility, and Merav Michaeli announced that she was thinking of another candidate for the committee.
