Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has indicated his willingness to proceed with a ceasefire agreement involving Israel, despite his reservations about the terms. Speaking on Monday, Aoun acknowledged his dissatisfaction with aspects of the deal but suggested there was little alternative to pursuing it.
“I am not pleased with Israel, but show me another solution that I can work with, whatever it may be,” Aoun said in comments that reflect the difficult position facing Lebanese leadership as the country seeks an end to ongoing hostilities.
The president’s remarks appear directed at domestic critics of the proposed framework agreement. Aoun challenged opponents of the deal to present viable alternatives, stating he remains open to any accord or solution that could break the cycle of conflict affecting Lebanon.
His comments underscore the constraints facing Lebanon as it navigates negotiations with a much more militarily powerful neighbour, whilst attempting to rebuild stability in a nation already weakened by years of political and economic crisis.
