Israel’s Supreme Court has unanimously invalidated a law that froze the arrest of ultra-Orthodox draft evaders, with all nine justices ruling the legislation contained fundamental procedural defects. The decision represents a significant development in the contentious issue of mandatory military service for the ultra-Orthodox community.
Justice Shlomo Solberg stated that enforcement against the ultra-Orthodox is not about Torah study itself, but concerns their evasion of military service. The ruling effectively nullifies protections that had been granted to Haredi individuals who failed to report for conscription.
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from ultra-Orthodox political figures, with coalition member MK Moshe Gafni condemning the ruling as part of a systematic persecution campaign against the Torah-observant community.
