The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) reported on Tuesday that a tanker was struck by three projectiles whilst exiting the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 17 nautical miles east of Khassab in Oman.

The incident marks a significant escalation in maritime security concerns in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, through which approximately one-third of global seaborne oil trade passes.

The nature of the projectiles and the identity of those responsible remain unclear. The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and previous attacks on commercial vessels in the area.

No immediate reports of casualties or environmental damage have been confirmed, though the extent of damage to the vessel is being assessed.
